President João Lourenço highlighted Angola’s 50 years of UN membership, underscoring the country’s progress in consolidating peace and national reconciliation.
Speaking at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, President João Lourenço highlighted the special significance of Angola’s participation this year, as the country marks the 50th anniversary of its admission as a full member of the United Nations.
The Head of State recalled that Angola’s admission to the United Nations represented a historic achievement, attained in an international context marked by the Cold War, whose rivalries had a profound impact on the country’s political and social trajectory until peace was achieved in 2002.
According to President João Lourenço, the experiences of the past contributed to building peace, understanding and national reconciliation — principles that continue to guide Angola’s foreign policy.
In this context, he highlighted the decorations awarded to leading figures of the national liberation struggle and representatives of civil society as part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Angola’s Independence. He also announced that a monument honouring the victims of the political conflicts that affected Angola between Independence in 1975 and the achievement of peace in April 2002 will be inaugurated in Luanda in October.
The 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly is being held under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All,” with a focus on strengthening multilateralism and enhancing the international community’s capacity to respond effectively to global challenges.
