Augusto da Silva Tomás, State Secretary for Public Firms
June 1, 2007 - The secretary of State for the Public Business Sector, Augusto da Silva Tomás undertook a two days visit to the USA,Washington, D.C. This was is first official visit to the United States of America.
During his visit Augusto da Silva Tomás met with the US Assistant Secretary of State for Commerce, the Director of the US Export and Import Bank (EXIM BANK) and representatives of the USA/Angola chamber of commerce, among others.
The visit was mainly intended to learn from more experienced countries and seek solutions to the various problems facing the country at a time peace is currently prevailing in Angola.
"We are interested to assimilate, at the maximum, the positive experiences of other peoples and countries of the world, as Angolan plays an important role in the region and in the African continent”, he stated.
According to Augusto Tomás it is the Government’s intention to improve more and more the economic and financial situation of the country, setting up strong alliances and develop a sustainable programme that can transform the national richness to the benefit of Angolans themselves.
The programme of the visit included a meeting with the management of General Electric (GE), a firm with 75 years of experience and one of the most respected companies of the US market.
GE has been negotiating with Angola the supply of locomotives for the rehabilitation of the railways, which is expected to motivate other US firms to invest in the country, said the US secretary of State for Commerce.
Augusto Tomás appealed to the US Assistant Secretary State of Commerce to intercede with his country’s firms operating in Angola to reinforce their social responsibility in order to balance the interests of local and foreign workers and reduce possible tensions.
