Angola’s Electoral process

The Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (CNE), Caetano de Sousa, considered last weekend in Washington, DC the ongoing voter registration process in Angola as positive.

Caetano de Sousa made these remarks at a roundtable hosted by the US Deputy Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Carol Thompson, on the fringes of the Global Electoral Organization (GEO) Conference he attended in Washington from March 27 to 29, 2007.

Accompanied by the Angolan Ambassador to the USA, H. E. Josefina Pitra Diakité, the CNE Chairman gave an overview of the Angolan voter registration process, having explained CNE’s role as a monitoring agency of the electoral process countrywide, through the established provincial electoral commissions.

The roundtable also discussed issues relating to the challenges posed by the electoral period as well as the role of the international observers during the elections.

Attending the roundtable were several US Government officials at the Bureau for Southern Africa and representatives from such NGOs as the National Democratic Institute (NDI), the International Republican Institute (IRI), and IFES, an international NGO supporting the establishment of democratic societies around the world, in general, and in Africa, in particular.
